How scaffolding companies in Ireland win more main contractor work

Short answer: most Irish scaffolding firms get their work from the same handful of main contractors, through relationships and word of mouth. To win more, get in front of the people who actually buy scaffolding packages at contractors you don't work with yet: commercial managers, package buyers and contracts managers. Get on their tender lists before the job is priced, and stay in touch until a project comes up. Direct, well-aimed outreach is the fastest way to do that at scale.
Where the work is in 2026
There is plenty of building going on. The CSO counted 36,284 new homes completed in 2025, up 20.4% on 2024 and the highest since the series began in 2011. Apartments were the fastest-growing part, up 38.7% to 12,047. Apartment schemes, commercial fit-outs and public projects all need access and scaffolding for long periods, and they are run by main contractors who buy packages from specialists.
The question for most scaffolders isn't whether the work exists. It's whether they are on the list when it's priced.
Who buys scaffolding at a main contractor
The owner of a main contractor rarely picks the scaffolder. These are the people to reach:
| Role | What they care about |
|---|---|
| Commercial manager or package buyer | Price, scope, a clean quote and a firm that won't cause variations |
| Contracts manager | Programme, reliability, crews turning up when promised |
| Project manager on site | Safety, tidy sites, quick response to changes |
| Health and safety manager | Safety records, training and certification |
| Developer's project manager | Firms the main contractor can trust on the developer's own schemes |
| Facilities manager | Access for maintenance and repair on existing buildings |
If you only ever talk to the managing director, you miss the people who decide.
Get on the tender list before the job is priced
Main contractors usually invite specialists they already know to price packages. Getting known before the tender goes out is the whole game.
- Have your credentials ready. Many main contractors look for evidence of a safety management system when they prequalify subcontractors. Safe-T-Cert, run by the Construction Industry Federation, is one scheme Irish contractors use to show it. Keep insurance details, method statements and a short project list in one pack you can send the same day.
- Track projects early. Planning applications and project databases (such as BuildingInfo or CIS) show schemes months before work starts on site, and who the main contractor is.
- Ask to be added to their supply chain list. Many contractors have a subcontractor registration or prequalification form. Ask for it directly.
- Follow up when a project is named. Once you know a contractor has won a scheme, contact the package buyer with one or two relevant past jobs.
The outreach that gets scaffolders priced
This is how we run it for scaffolding and other specialist subcontractors:
- A list of the right people: commercial managers, package buyers and contracts managers at main contractors and developers active in your area, with their contact details checked.
- Short emails about their work: a recent project of theirs, a similar job you've done, and a simple question such as whether you can get on their list for the next scheme.
- LinkedIn alongside email: a connection request and a short note to the same people, so your name is familiar.
- A few follow-ups, spaced out: stopped the moment they reply.
- Every reply handled quickly: questions answered and the interested ones booked in for a call or a site visit.
- A steady pace: a set number of new contractors reached each month, so the pipeline doesn't depend on one or two relationships.
An example first email:
Subject: Scaffolding for your [scheme name] job
Hi [first name], I saw [contractor] is starting on [scheme] in [town]. We did the scaffolding on [similar project] last year. Could we get on your list to price the access package for this one, or for your next scheme?
What this looked like for Summit Scaffolding
Summit Scaffolding went from pricing around €250k of work a month to around €1m a month compared with a year earlier, and through the outreach started talking to two developers it had no previous relationship with. Keith from Summit talks about it in a video on our site.

Questions scaffolding firms ask
How can a scaffolding company in Ireland find new contractors to work with?
Identify the main contractors and developers active in your area, find the commercial managers and package buyers there, and contact them directly with a relevant past job and a request to get on their tender list. Follow up when they win a scheme.
Who decides which scaffolder a main contractor uses?
Usually the commercial manager or package buyer, with input from the contracts manager and the health and safety manager.
How do I get on a main contractor's tender list?
Ask for their subcontractor registration or prequalification form, send your credentials pack the same day, and follow up with the package buyer once they have a scheme you can price.
Does cold email work for scaffolding companies?
Yes, when it is short, aimed at the right people at the right contractors and followed up properly. It works best alongside LinkedIn and a quick phone call once someone replies.
